Apparently (as I discovered after an extensive research on-line) Linksys WRT54GL/WRT54G/WRT54GS routers were not originally designed to support WDS. Although the support was added in later firmware update, WDS is not one of their advertised features, and Linksys pretty much ignores it in this series of routers.
