Jan 25, 2008 · I don't know much about Macs but I'm trying to fix my friend's computer. It's a 2008 Mac with El Capitan. We did a clean install but still get the gray screen for a normal boot. I can't get Apple's hardware diagnostics to boot (holding D or Option D). That only gives a gray screen too. I can however get to a safe mode boot.
